I swear...

...I love an original simile, but they're not so common.   I picked up an old Country Living from 20 plus years ago; there's a story in it by a Mary Coleman, beginning with a day which "dawned mild as a spinster's oath...".

Probably couldn't be written today, could it?

  1. No, we have to be careful with what we say and write nowadays.

  2. Most definitely not! Although, with much of what is written (curse words etc., graphic scenes) it seems rather unfair.

  3. You know, Tracy and Sarah - I was just thinking that a modern day "spinster" wouldn't necessarily use a milder oath than anyone else. But you two are thinking something which didn't even occur to me! hmmm
I really hadn't thought of it that way.

  4. I wonder whether that means the day dawned like a lamb or a lion?

So glad you shared this! I love words and phrases. I may have to copy that one into my notebook :-)
