winter blackbird

I was surprised yesterday to see this grackle at the feeder - they always fly south for the winter.  He didn't appear to be injured.

I wonder how he's feeling today - it was about one degree at sunrise this morning!   Brrrr!

  1. We had robins in our yard last week. We weren't sure if they were flying south, from the north or flying back north, from the south.:-) Then - we had our "bit" of snow Thursday/Friday, and I've decided they must have been heading farther south.
In response to your reply to my blog today, our UMW emphasis is separate from the religious seasons of the year. We encourage units to observe the Call to Prayer and Self-Denial in the first quarter of the year. Lent is a separate observance.

  2. I am always intrigued by birds in winter. Tiny little things out there in the extreme weather. Hope he's just stopping by your feeder on the way to somewhere warmer!

    Blessings, Debbie

  3. This has been an odd season for birds. I've seen robins in the yard, and last week I saw a HUGE flock of starlings pass through (usually that happens in the fall). I wonder what it means?

    1. I know - unless it's due to our milder than normal weather conditions.
